Carpet beetles are small insects that can cause big problems for carpets, rugs, clothing and other natural materials in your home. Because they often feed in quiet, hidden areas, damage is usually well under way before anyone realises there’s a problem.

Chris Tudor Pest Control provides thorough carpet beetle treatments for properties in Stroud, Stonehouse, Chalford, Bussage, Bisley, Painswick, Birdlip, Cranham, Nailsworth, Dursley, Charfield, Wotton‑under‑Edge, Thornbury, Berkeley, Slimbridge, Frampton‑on‑Severn, Gloucester, Upton St. Leonards, Cheltenham, Cirencester, South Cerney, Kemble, Cricklade, Fairford, Lechlade, Tetbury, Malmesbury, Bibury, Burford, Carterton, Bourton‑on‑the‑Water, Moreton‑in‑Marsh and surrounding Gloucestershire villages.

What Are Carpet Beetles?

Adult carpet beetles are small, rounded beetles, similar in size to a tiny ladybird. Depending on the species, they may be:

  • mottled black, brown and cream
  • dark with lighter patches
  • occasionally with yellowish or whitish markings

The real culprits, though, are the larvae – often called “woolly bears”. These are small, bristly grubs that feed on natural materials such as:

  • wool carpets and rugs
  • clothing and blankets containing wool, cashmere or hair
  • upholstery, felt and padding
  • animal-based materials and collections

They thrive in undisturbed spots – behind furniture, under beds, in cupboards, lofts and spare rooms – in homes and businesses from Stroud and Gloucester to Cheltenham, Cirencester, Tetbury and the Cotswolds.

Signs You Might Have Carpet Beetles

Because adults are small and often fly in and out through windows, they’re easy to overlook. Instead, you’re more likely to notice:

  • irregular, patchy damage to carpets, especially along skirting boards or under furniture
  • holes or thinning in woollen clothing, blankets or stored fabrics
  • shed larval skins and small, bristly “woolly bear” grubs in dark corners
  • a few small, rounded beetles near windowsills, light fittings or on walls

If you spot any of these issues in your property in Stroud, Nailsworth, Dursley, Wotton‑under‑Edge, Fairford, Lechlade, Bourton‑on‑the‑Water, Moreton‑in‑Marsh or nearby, it’s worth arranging a professional inspection before more damage occurs.

Why Carpet Beetles Are a Problem

Carpet beetles are now considered one of the most significant textile pests in the UK. Left untreated, they can:

  • permanently damage expensive wool carpets and rugs
  • ruin stored clothing, especially natural fibres
  • mark soft furnishings, throws and decorative textiles
  • nibble at items like book bindings, felt and some museum or hobby collections

Larvae can feed for months, and because they like dark, hidden places, extensive damage can occur behind sofas, in unused rooms or under stored boxes before anyone notices – particularly in older houses and cottages around Painswick, Birdlip, Cranham, Bibury, Burford, Carterton and Malmesbury.

Our Approach to Carpet Beetle Control

Chris Tudor Pest Control focuses on both removing the existing infestation and reducing the risk of it returning. A typical treatment plan includes:

1. Inspection and Assessment

We start by:

  • checking affected rooms, carpets, wardrobes and loft areas
  • identifying the level of activity and where larvae are feeding
  • looking for conditions that may be encouraging beetles, such as accumulated lint, debris or old animal materials

This allows us to tailor the treatment to your property in Stroud, Stonehouse, Chalford, Bussage, Bisley, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Cirencester or any of the other locations we cover.

2. Preparation Advice

Before treatment, we may recommend:

  • vacuuming carpets thoroughly, especially at edges and under furniture
  • moving or lifting items where practical to expose hidden areas
  • isolating heavily infested textiles for separate cleaning or disposal

Chris will explain exactly what’s needed so you know how to prepare without feeling overwhelmed.

3. Professional Insecticide Treatment

We use specialist residual insecticides designed to target crawling insects like carpet beetle larvae. These are applied carefully to:

  • carpets and rugs
  • skirting boards and cracks
  • areas under and behind furniture
  • loft spaces or other infested sites

The residual action means the treatment continues working for weeks, killing larvae as they encounter treated surfaces.

4. Follow‑Up and Prevention

In some cases, a follow‑up visit may be recommended, particularly where activity was heavy or widespread. Chris will also offer practical tips to help prevent future issues, such as:

  • regular vacuuming in less‑used rooms and under furniture
  • checking stored textiles and clothing periodically
  • sealing gaps where birds or rodents may have been nesting (these can attract beetles)

Carpet Beetle Control for Homes and Businesses

Whether you’re dealing with damage in a family home in Stroud, a rental property in Gloucester, a holiday cottage in South Cerney, Fairford or Lechlade, or a commercial site in Cheltenham or Cirencester with sensitive textiles, Chris can:

  • assess the risk and extent of any infestation
  • recommend a plan that fits around your use of the building
  • provide clear reports and advice where required for landlords or managing agents

We always work tidily and respectfully, keeping disruption to a minimum.

A Word from Chris:

“Carpet beetles can quietly eat away at your carpets and clothes long before you spot the problem, and by then the damage is often quite advanced. If you’ve noticed unexplained patches on carpets or holes in natural‑fibre clothing, I’d encourage you to get in touch. I can inspect your property, confirm if carpet beetles are to blame and put together a straightforward plan to get rid of them and protect your fabrics. Whether you’re in Stroud, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Cirencester, Dursley, Nailsworth, Tetbury or any of the surrounding Gloucestershire villages, I’ll be pleased to help you sort out a troublesome carpet beetle issue.”
